The Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS) is working hard to ensure it can continue to deliver vital services to the one in three Illinois residents that rely on them. Secretary Grace Hou has filed a number of federal waivers to increase benefit levels and allow customers to access them remotely.
While DHS is keeping 13 local offices open during the outbreak, customers are encouraged to apply for and adjust benefits online or by calling 1-833-2-FIND-HELP. To streamline these remote services, DHS has upgraded its online platform and doubled the benefit assistance call center capacity.
As I mentioned in the last newsletter, DHS has significantly increased the value of SNAP customer benefits. The department is also exploring options to allow trusted home care providers and family members to redeem SNAP benefits on behalf of seniors and people with disabilities to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission.
The federal government has just approved the Illinois request to deliver teleheath services to families in the Early Intervention program. Participating providers should check their provider portal for information on new procedures for billing EI Telehealth services.
